Summer Racing Wrap
To say it’s been an action packed summer for the team at JKB Racing would be an understatement! From exciting race wins, to yearling sales - 2021 has kicked off with a bang.
The beginning of the year is a really busy time for thoroughbred racing in Tasmania, with teams and stables from all ends of the state packing in huge race days across a jam packed calendar. Throw a Facebook shutdown into the mix, thanks to the short lived news ban, and it’s safe to say we’ve been kept on our toes! The highlight would have to be our very first win in the Launceston Cup and the way our team have, as always, given their all during an equally busy and exciting time.
Read on for a wrap up of the last couple of months.
Cressy Chaff Cutters Jason Osborne Longford Cup 2021
If you’re one of our loyal Facebook page followers, then you’ll know that the 1st of January was an exciting day for us. It’s one of our favourite race days, which started off pretty quietly until French Heiress produced a convincing 2nd place in Race 4, ridden by Ismail Toker. This led into a huge end to day for us, with Glass Warrior taking out a stellar win in the Cup, quickly followed by Costero in Race 7 before we wrapped up for the day. This makes back to back Longford Cup wins for us, following our 2020 win with Triple Strip (a year which we all know will be memorable for many more reasons!).
Aside from great results, Longford Cup day always holds a special place for us, it’s one of the longest running race days in Tasmania and also happens to be our local training track located just over the road from our stables.
We followed up our Longford Cup day results with a treble in Launceston and a quadrella in Devonport a few days later. You can read more about those results here.
Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale
During the lead up to the Launceston Cup, not only are we nurturing our current horses, ensuring they are happy and in top condition, we’re also looking to the future and our next crop of yearlings. Trainers are given opportunities to view the yearlings, as well as attend stud open days in the lead up to the sales which is a great opportunity to seek out our top picks. There are plenty of things we look for in the ideal yearling, such as the perfect mix of:
A big, round girth with plenty of lung & heart room
A strong rear end with lots of push off power
A good overall presence and temperament
We had a successful day at the sales, at their new home at Quercus Park, Carrick. Shares are selling fast, you can view our crop here and make an enquiry if you’re keen to get involved. If you’re new to racehorse ownership, feel free to reach out and have a chat with Penny - she’ll find you the perfect match!
2021 Ladbrokes Launceston Cup
What a day!
John and the team’s very first win in the Launceston Cup and it was a nail biter but in the end, Glass Warrior came through with the goods. John had an inkling early that the mare might be in with a shot, turning to his father, George and saying “she might be a chance here!”. As it turns out, she was!
It was also great to see the top 3 horses in the field were all Tasmanian bred, further proof of the strength of our thoroughbred racing industry.

Other news
In other news, we were lucky enough to receive brand new race day rugs, organised by Jess Elphinstone and made by Dianne Ray-Luttrell and Remus Rugs who have done a beautiful job once again.
…And here’s a photo of a perfect summer evening at Mowbray as we look to autumn. One things for sure, we are heading into the next season of racing with plenty of momentum!
