Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring!

Spring/Summer Stable Update

It’s time to pack away the puffer jackets and the horse rugs because the spring/summer racing season is here. It’s about now that we look forward to another action-packed racing calendar, and also wonder how we got here again so quickly! In reflection, below is a snippet of how the last Spring/Summer carnival looked for the team at JKB.

…And now for 2021/22

2YO and 3YO runners

Our first 2YO’s of the season were trialled at Launceston on Monday 1st November, after the trials were postponed from the Friday 29th October due to forecast thunderstorms.  We had some very excited owners looking to see their horses on the racetrack for the first time in Enchanted Spy (Squamosa/Sulmita) and Unique Glow (Alpine Eagle x Joey Jo Jo). Also resuming at Launceston on Monday were our 3YO contingent - Angeli, Page, Unclouded & Zewinna.  The ever consistent Blaze Forth trialled, as well as the current 3YO of the Year, Swoop Dog.  It is terrific to see these horses back at the track. These horses are set to race throughout October alongside Warica, Dawn Eagle, Further North, Magic Typhoon, Alpine Blast, Alpine Affair, Power Magnum, Argyle Beach, Champagne Cinders and Super Swoop to name a few.

Recent Wins

We made it an extra happy Friday with a double win on October 22nd, kicking off our spring/summer campaign. Champagne Cinders took out Race 3 convincingly over 1220m followed by Costero over 2150m in Race 7.

Spring/Summer Racing Calendar Snapshot

We think a day at the races is great anytime, but here are some key dates you might like to make note of over the new 2021/22 Tasmanian thoroughbred racing calendar.

  • The return of night racing

Wednesday night racing returned to the Tasmanian Turf Club at Mowbray on Wednesday 6th October. There’s nothing quite like racing under lights, a great opportunity to head out for some midweek racing action.

  • Melbourne Cup Day Racing in Hobart

Tuesday 2nd November saw us head to Hobart for Melbourne Cup Day Racing. Costero took out an unlucky 4th in Race 2 with Further North finishing 3rd in Race 3.

  • Ladbrokes Golden Mile - Friday 4th December 2021

This twilight race meeting at the all-weather track at Spreyton kicks off the feature racing calendar for the summer.

  • Longford Cup - Saturday 1st January 2022

It’s no secret we have a soft spot for this one. Team JKB has been lucky enough to take out the last two Longford Cups (Triple Strip in 2020 and Glass Warrior in 2021), so this is our opportunity to make it a treble!

  • Devonport Cup Day - Wednesday 5th January 2022

A guaranteed day of action-packed racing - rain hail or shine.

  • Brighton Cup - Friday 7th January 2022

The first big race day in the south for the season, incorporating the Tasmanian Guineas.

  • Launceston Guineas - Friday 28th January

The Launceston Guineas over 2100m is the main event, but there’s plenty of other action including the Ladbrokes Stakes.

  • Hobart Cup - Sunday 13th February 2022

Always a great day in Hobart, on this day in 2021 Glass Warrior seemingly missed the mark, but it ended up working in her favour sending her into the Launceston Cup feeling fresh and ready to take the win!

  • Launceston Cup - Wednesday 23rd February 2022

The biggest day on the thoroughbred racing calendar in Tasmania and although a very big ask, it is our chance to make it two years in a row!

We hope to you see you at the track over the coming months!
