Summer Racing 21/22
Another Longford Cup crown, exciting new yearlings joining the stable and some all-around great results for our team.
Now that we are well and truly into the autumn racing calendar, we’ve had (a little bit) of time to stop and reflect on the spring and summer. And what a time it was!
As always it’s a huge start to the year which kicks off with the Longford Cup, rolling into yearling sales, Launceston Cup and some big race days in the south of the state. Our wonderful team continually hit the ground running and for that we are incredibly thankful. We’ve welcomed some new faces to the team and are looking forward to seeing them flourish.
Read on for a wrap up of the last few months.
JKB Racing takes out the Longford Cup for the third year in a row
We don’t like to play favourites, but it has to be said that we have a soft spot for the Cressy Chaff Cutters Jim Osborne Longford Cup. We were thrilled to take out this historic race for the 3rd year running. A stellar ride from Siggy Carr on board Super Swoop on a sweltering hot day sealed the deal. Of the ride, Siggy said, “I am rapt to have finally won a Longford Cup and I have to thank John Blacker and the owners for having faith in me to deliver today". Read the full feature here.
Another notable result on the day was a win in the Tasmanian Livestock Services 1400m with Erica Byrne Burke leading Hamogany to the winning post.
As always, out team were legends on the day ensuring the horses were safe and well in the heat.
2022 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale
As always, following the back of the Longford Cup comes the Devonport Cup and Stakes Day in Hobart leading into the Hobart Cup and Launceston Cup. Amongst these huge race days comes the Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale - a huge day for thoroughbred trainers and breeders in Tasmania. The lead up to the sales includes viewing the yearlings before they head to the sale yard to ensure they have the traits we are looking for in our next crop. Then, onto the excitement of the sales!
We again had a successful day at the sales, securing the yearlings we were keen on. You can view them here - limited shares are remaining.

New team members!
During the summer season we welcomed Chloe van Den Bosch(left) and Brooke Hanham (right) to the team. Chloe joins us a stablehand/groundstaff, playing an integral role in ensuring our horses are happy and perfectly prepped for race days. Brooke has joined us as apprentice jockey and has had a very busy summer completing many trials in preparation for first race ride. We look forward to Brooke joining the jockey ranks and we will be eager for her to be riding for our stable.
Other notable results
The spring/summer racing calendar brought a mixed bag of results for JKB racing with strong winning rides in the mix all around the state including a double on Hobart Cup day. From exciting sprints to maiden wins, nail-biting photo finishes and plenty of 2nds and 3rds with impressive runs behind them - the warmer months had it all. Whether it’s under lights or in the sunshine, we’re always super proud of the way our team and horses perform.
